Since launching the first Ben Sherman shirt in 1963, Ben's vibrant apparel has become synonymous with youth, style and rebellion. Influenced by the classic American Ivy League shirt, Ben added the back hook and button to the back collar and used his passion for fabric, pattern and color to create a garment previously unseen in England. British youth culture was quick to adopt the Ben Sherman shirt for its quality, unique design and as a key indicator of their belonging to a movement.Six decades later, Ben’s vibrant spirit has become as celebrated in the fashion world as his iconic shirts and his way of thinking still influences the global brand to this day. ORIGINAL SINCE 1963
1963
Ben Sherman, born Arthur Ben Sugarman, returned to his native Brighton from the USA and launches his own range of shirts.
1964
Between Brighton and Hastings, mods fight rockers at the seaside, an episode later dubbed "The Second Battle of Hastings."
1970
Ben Sherman famously orders a million yards of colorful striped material from his American fabric mill.
1972
Paul Weller forms 'The Jam' with his school friend Steve Brookes, inspired by Otis Redding, Dr. Feelgood and The Who.
1973
The Wigan Casino, an epicentre for mod's sister movement, Northern Soul, opens.
1977
The first major mod revival sees thousands attend scooter rallies on the Isle of Wight and in Scarborough in Yorkshire.
1979
The release of Quadrophenia, the cult film starring Phil Daniels and Leslie Ash, depicts scenes of 1960's mod life.
1980
British ska emerges as another musical genre with a stylish look. Its protagonists adopt Ben Sherman as part of their uniform.
1985
A skinhead revival occurred. Many female skinheads opt for feather cuts--short on the crown, with a fringe.
1995
Blur releases "Country House" on the same day Oasis releases "Roll With It" - dubbed "The battle of Britpop". Both wear Ben Sherman.
2002
Ben Sherman Carnaby Street store opens.
2004
Ben Sherman partners with Team GB as an official sponsor of the Olympic squad in Greece.
2006
'This is England' is released, starring a young Thomas Turgoose in a checked Ben Sherman shirt.
2008
Paul Weller designs a limited-edition range of shirts based on his favourite "Bennies" of the Sixties.
2011
The film 'Casuals' is released, telling the story of how football fans in the 80s & 90s invented their own fashion movement.
2013
'Ben Sherman: 50 Years of British Style' by Josh Sims, £30, is published on 7 February.
2014
The Original Button Up Campaign is launched.
2015
Ben Sherman is acquired by Marquee Brands.
2017
Ben Sherman joins official London Fashion Week Men's schedule with the Spirit of Mod runway collection.
